The origin of birthstones is generally attributed to the Breastplate of Aaron
described in Exodus 28: 15 - 30. The Breastplate was a ceremonial
religious device consisting of four rows of three gemstones each, in the
following pattern:

These twelve gemstones represented the twelve tribes of Israel. The twelve positions have since been associated with the twelve months of the
calendar year and the
twelve signs of the zodiac.
Since gemstones were classified primarily by color in
ancient times, rather than by the mineral and chemical properties used
today, there is some disagreement as to the modern names for the gemstones
which appeared in the
Breastplate of Aaron. Different authorities have therefore assigned
different gemstones to the various months.
Other birthstone lists are of unknown or uncertain origin, and others are just
